A shaken mum has told how she fought off bag-snatchers at a road junction in Acklam.

The 30-year-old woman, who does not want to be named, says the would-be thieves opened both car doors and one tried to grab her handbag from the passenger seat.

The frightening incident occurred at 4pm on Tuesday at lights in Hatfield Road as the driver went to collect her daughter from led light accessories nursery.

The Acklam mum said: "They pulled up alongside me on a black scooter. One tried the passenger door and the other was trying to get into the other side.

"It was awful, I just couldn't believe the cheek of them.

Police are warning lone women drivers to beware of thieves who are taking advantage of the fact many cars have central locking.

It is believed the same youths carried out a similar attack on another victim in Acklam.

On that occasion they failed to open the doors of the car.
